Suppose you have an old apple orchard with an unusual heirloom variety and you want to preserve it. Planting seeds won’t produce fruit identical to that of its parent. However, you can preserve the exact genetic characteristics through apple tree grafting. What Is Grafting

At its core, grafting joins the rootstock and scion from two separate plants. Rootstock refers to the parts of the tree underground and the very lowest portion of the trunk. The scion depends on your grafting method.
For typical stick grafting, the scion wood is about the diameter of a pencil collected during the dormant season from the part of the tree that’s one year old. You’re also looking for a section with multiple inactive buds.

When done correctly, the cambium (the thin growing layers beneath the bark) of both the scion and rootstock heal together. The rootstock provides water, nutrients, and disease resistance, while the scion wood determines what fruit you’ll harvest.

This partnership lets you combine the best traits of two different trees. Want a drought-tolerant root system with branches that produce your favorite heirloom apples? Grafting makes it possible. A grafted avocado tree on hardy rootstock has seasonal protection built in and will better survive Sonoma’s occasional cold snaps than one grown from seed. Dwarfing rootstock keeps citrus trees at manageable heights while maintaining full-sized fruit production. Just be sure to stay on top of pest control! When to Graft Fruit Trees in Sonoma

In the North Bay, most grafting typically happens between January through early March, just as our fruit trees are about to wake up. This is when the cambium is active enough to heal, but the tree isn’t directing its energy into leaves and flowers.

Stone fruit grafting—for peaches, plums, cherries, and apricots—works best in late winter before buds swell. Citrus grafting follows slightly different rules—it can happen as you’re adding soil amendments to support your harvest in spring and early summer. For nut tree grafting, wait until leaf buds begin showing green.

Grafting Techniques

How to splice a tree is informed by what you have to work with and plan to achieve.

Cleft Graft

To change what an established tree produces or when repairing damaged trees, you’ll want to cleft graft. To execute, split the rootstock and insert a wedge-shaped scion wood.

Bark Graft

This approach is often used to create multiple grafts on a larger rootstock. It’s best conducted in spring when bark slips easily from the wood. The scion is cut to a long point and tucked just under the bark of the rootstock.

Bridge Grafting

A girdled tree is one whose bark and cambium layer on the trunk have been removed by orchard pests, mechanical injury, or even disease. If a tree is completely girdled, survival is unlikely because the tissue responsible for transporting sugars from the leaves down to the roots is disrupted. However, bridge grafting can save a girdled tree. The scion wood acts as a conduit over the injured area, re-establishing nutrient and water flow.

Chip Budding

Performed during active growth periods, budding is often used to propagate many more trees from a limited supply. Since bud grafting requires less scion wood, it’s particularly useful when you’re dealing with a limited supply, such as an unusual, local-to-Sonoma variety. Instead of a length of wood, a single bud with a small bit of bark (called the bud shield) is cut out. A similar-sized cut is made on the rootstock, into which the bud is inserted.

Tips for Improving Your Grafting Success Rate

Not all grafts take, but understanding these factors can improve your odds:

Graft Compatibility

Generally, varieties within the same species pair well. In other words, apples to apples applies! Different species within the same genus, such as grafting a Bartlett to an Asian pear or Meyer lemon to an Owari mandarin, is a fairly safe bet. However, not all combinations within the same species or genus are guaranteed.
Pome fruits (apples/pears) are forgiving, while stone fruits (peaches, cherries, plums) are not. And, while you can graft different kinds of plums together (and even plums onto apricots), the technique can be challenging and the outcome unpredictable. So, even when grafting within more compatible pairings, it’s best to research specifics or consult with Sonoma Pruner.
Grafting different genus within the same family is akin to rolling dice—odds are not high you’ll win. If you’d like to try an incompatible pairing, such as European pear to a quince, you’ll need a small piece of a third, compatible variety such as an Old Home cultivar inserted between the two to make the connection work.

Cambium Contact

When executing your graft, the thin green layer just under the bark must line up between rootstock and scion. To prevent tissue from dying, it’s extremely important to make clean cuts with your grafting knife and tree pruning shears.

Proper Sealing

Once positioned, safeguard the graft from air and moisture loss. Firmly wrap any cut surfaces with grafting tape or parafilm. For extra protection, you can also apply grafting wax.

Positioning and Pruning

Graft in the direction of the hottest time of day (typically south or southwest) to ensure the new growth gets adequate sunlight. Remove other shoots and branches on the same branch where you’re grafting—your graft needs all available energy, and competing growth will slow its progress.

Want an even higher success rate? Remove most of the tree. The graft will receive the energy needed to grow strong. Grafting a small twig onto a fully mature tree with massive structure will take many years to grow and produce. The workaround is to prune a portion of the leaves and branches so there’s less competition for the new graft.

If you’ve removed the entire upper part of a tree and grafted in many places, you must remove all rootstock shoots as the grafts progress so no competition can develop.

Scion Wood Quality

Collect scion wood during dormancy when the tree isn’t actively growing. Wood should be from the previous season’s growth—neither too young and green nor too old and thick. Store it wrapped in slightly damp paper towels inside plastic bags in your refrigerator until you’re ready to graft.

Tree Graft Aftercare

For the first few weeks, keep grafts protected from wind and excessive sun. Keep a watchful eye to make sure other leaves and branches aren’t covering the new graft. Be prepared to support your graft with a stake or stick—birds can easily snap a fresh graft.
When the graft union has healed (in about 4-8 weeks), remove the tree grafting tape or parafilm. As the grafts progress, you must remove all rootstock shoots so no competition can develop. When you see new growth from the scion, you’ve achieved a successful graft.
